Smartwatches are the hottest property in tech right now, and there are plenty of upcoming devices to get excited about. As the key period of 2022 approaches, we're expecting all of the big name devices from the Galaxy Watch 5 and Apple Watch Series 8 to appear in the coming months. And the appearance of Google's first smartwatch – the Google Pixel Watch – has the potential to shake up the world of Android smartwatches. After years of waiting, the Google Pixel Watch is official – and it will be launched in Fall 2022. The first smartwatch designed and built by Google was unveiled at I/O 2022, but details are still a little sparse on exactly what we'll get. Google revealed that the Pixel Watch is made of recycled stainless steel, which should give it a premium feel, and has quick release bands for easy customization. Fitbit will power the fitness tracking elements of the smartwatch, offering step and activity tracking, 24/7 heart rate and its Active Zone Minutes metric. Wear OS 3.0 will offer apps, an improved Google Wallet with payments and the company’s voice assistant – plus a new SOS feature. There will also be a cellular version, and the Pixel Watch will run on an "improved" version of Wear 3.0, with a revamped UI. The smartwatch is set to be released “this Fall”, alongside the Pixel 7 smartphone, so we’ll have to wait until then for more detailed information.

We're expecting an Apple Watch Series 8 on schedule for September 2022 – and there has been a smattering of rumors to go with it. A design change is unlikely after the Series 7 rolled out a new larger display, but we could see a new body temperature sensor, that was reportedly held back from the last generation. However, it seems we won't get any blood pressure or glucose tracking this time around.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 is also slated for this autumn, and could bring about some sizeable changes from the Watch 4. It looks like the Classic version will be dropped, in favor of a Galaxy Watch 5 Pro version, which is rumored to have a massive 572 mAh battery. New leaks have pointed to three possible skews, after codenames Heart-S, Heart-L and Heart-Pro were uncovered. Samsung watchers have taken that to mean that there will be two sizes of the standard Galaxy Watch 5, and conformation of a Watch 5 Pro edition. There have also been strong rumors that Samsung will add a temperature sensor to its forthcoming smartwatch. Expect to see more leaks as we get closer to a September launch. The original Apple Watch SE was launched back in 2020, and was ignored in last year's keynote, so a refresh this September seems odds on. According to the rumors, the Apple Watch SE 2022 will retain the same case design and 40mm/44mm sizes – so the older shape and size compared to the Series 7/8. But allegedly it will gain the always-on display, which was omitted from the original. And in a huge shock, the rumors state that ECG will head to the Apple Watch SE 2 – the first time it's been available outside the Apple flagship smartwatch. There should also be improvements under the hood, but the bad news is that there's a reported price increase to $299. However, all this is pure speculation at this stage.
